We like girls in this house!

The poor men in my house are outnumbered. Damon and Declan... that's it. Then there is Daunika, Aurora, Kalani, and even our pets - Zoey, Suki and Livvy are girls! Well, recent changes in our home have even further stacked the deck against the males in this house - we got chicks!!!

Yes, you heard that right - we are happy about the addition and so excited to have fresh eggs and humanely treated food for the years to come. This was a decision years in the making, and due to our recent move to nearly an acre property - we dove in! Our family loves animals and loves eggs, this is the perfect combination to make sure we are doing our part to uphold our morals AND stay with in our budget.

Oh ya, and my kids are THRILLED. :)

We started out by heading over to Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell. I love that our birds are local, from a company that has been in business almost 100 years, and the people there were so helpful.

Daunika helped pick out our Golden Sex breeds.

Aurora enjoyed checking out the ducklings while we were there too!

When we got home, after the chicks had a couple hours to settle in and find some calm, we happily dove in to handling them. We want them to be friendly and used to people - so we are starting with babies that will always remember people handling them.

This is our girls holding 2 of our 3 Black Australorps

Aurora's favorites are the Goldens...

I'm fond of the littlest one in our bunch - a tiny Rhode Island Red

Declan is so excited to pet them, but isn't allowed to hold them. He is doing amazing at understanding they are fragile!

Daunika enjoying holding our new chicks...

We have 11 chicks all together. We are expecting one or two to end up being roosters and have prepared the kids that these are food to our family but we can enjoy them too. It will be a great cycle of life learning for our whole family!

I can't wait to see them grow!!
